Collecting coins and banknotes is far more than a hobby. It combines history, culture and the preservation of value. Before you build your first collection, however, you should know a few important fundamentals.
The single most important factor in the value of a coin or banknote is its state of preservation. Two outwardly identical pieces can differ in price by several hundred or even several thousand percent depending on condition.

The rarer a piece is and the better its condition, the greater its collector value usually is.
Independent certification, for example by PMG (banknotes) or NGC (coins), confirms authenticity and grade. Certified pieces are usually easier to sell internationally and often achieve higher prices.
A good collection is not built overnight. Learn about the history of the pieces, compare prices and buy quality rather than quantity. Often a single rare example in outstanding condition is worth more than many ordinary pieces.
